Stop Painting Your Bathroom White – Designers Say Color Drenching is the Chicest Way To Create a Cozy, Calming Space

Color drenching topped the biggest design trends over the last couple of years and has remained a prominent decorating style ever since. Bedrooms thrive on the cozy, immersive feel, living rooms become instantly more cocooning without the contrast of a white ceiling, and entryways are so much more inviting thanks to the tonal finish.

And now bathrooms are entering their color-drenching era. These smaller rooms are filled with hard lines, cold surfaces, and sharp angles, but a color-drenched finish is the quickest (and most stylish) way to make them feel softer.

For decades, it was the default to make bathrooms feel as light and bright as possible, leaving shades of white favored on walls and ceilings, with color introduced through a few tiles or a vanity. But so often, this approach leaves a bathroom feeling smaller than it already is, while lacking some serious style and personality. But with color drenching, you get the opposite effect.

'Color drenching works beautifully in a bathroom because it allows the room to feel fully enveloped rather than broken up by different color stories,' says Nicole Arruda, Founder and Principal Designer at Nicole Alexandra Design. 'Bathrooms are often smaller spaces, so carrying one color throughout can actually make the architecture feel more expansive and intentional. It also creates a really beautiful backdrop for the materials in the room to become the layers that add depth.'

The appeal of this decorating style lies in its ability to create a tranquil, cozy bathroom. 'It creates visual calm,' adds interior designer Kat Lawton. 'It allows materials such as graphic tile, heavily veined slabs, or textured millwork to take center stage. So often in traditional interiors, the wall color contrasts with the trim, which can sometimes feel like a lot to look at. However, when the two are the same color, there’s a bit of a contemporary twist. It somehow feels like a nurturing, warm hug.'

A successful color-drenched bathroom celebrates tonal differences – a tile a shade or two darker than the paint color, or accessories a touch lighter, perhaps with a unique pattern or texture. These slight differences are what give a bathroom depth and interest – taking it from one-tone to a more dynamic, considered design.

'Sometimes the magic happens when you play with a whole family of colors, letting them mingle rather than insisting everything matches. Bathrooms are brilliant for this because tiles, paint, stone and brassware all bring something different to the party. You can go quite daring with color, but by mixing up the textures, tones and finishes, the room feels wonderfully layered rather than overwhelming. Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra.

'Don't become obsessed with finding the same shade for everything,' Keeley Sutcliffe, Design Manager at BC Designs, agrees. 'In fact, I'd argue that a little mismatch is what makes it interesting. Let the tiles have their own variation, choose ceramics that bring another tone into the mix, and allow your brassware to provide a bit of contrast.'

5 Bathrooms Elevated By Color Drenching

Color drenching is more versatile in a bathroom than you might think. Soft neutrals add coziness, while deeper, richer shades add a sense of sophistication that's not always easy to achieve in these rooms. It's about stepping out of your decorating comfort zone to try something new.

'I think we've become so used to bathrooms being broken up into different sections, with one color on the walls, another on the floor, and white ceramics sitting somewhere in between, that there's something quite refreshing about bringing everything together,' says Keeley. 'Color-drenching almost takes away those boundaries, allowing you to enjoy the room as a whole rather than noticing every individual surface. And in a bathroom, where you really want to create that feeling of escape, it works particularly well.' And these 5 spaces showcase how to get it right.

1. A Soft Neutral Scheme

Color drenching doesn't mean you can't still enjoy a neutral bathroom – the right shade can create the warmest and most inviting scheme. Take this design as a charming example, where a soft shade covers the walls, paneling, and ceiling, contrasted by a more rustic terracotta floor.

'For my own bathroom, I wanted the color to completely wrap the space and create a sense of softness and continuity. I chose a warm, earthy neutral that shifts subtly throughout the day with the natural light,' says Nicole. The layered approach means the space feels far from flat – textiles, wall texture, and natural materials combine to create a bathroom filled with thoughtful details.

'Rather than introducing contrast through paint, I wanted the interest to come from the materials – the terracotta floor, painted millwork, linen, and polished nickel. Keeping the palette tonal allowed all of those elements to live together in a way that feels layered and collected, while still letting the original character of the room come through. '

2. A Moody Bathroom Drenched in Burgundy

Don't be afraid to embrace moodier colors, either. A rich brown or deep red thrives in a small bathroom, creating a sense of coziness that suits these rooms perfectly. Here, it is lifted by a marble vanity top, brass fixtures, and a classic checkerboard floor, creating a truly luxurious feel.

'We've gone big on those deliciously deep, wine-red walls, carrying the color right up and across the ceiling to really wrap the room in warmth. But rather than continuing that exact shade everywhere, the tiles take things in a slightly different direction. The glossy, chocolatey finger tiles in the shower add texture and a little shimmer, while the marble checkerboard floor introduces creamy caramel tones alongside those deeper browns,' explains Grazzie.

'And then there's the brassware, which is almost the finishing flourish. Against all those rich reds and browns, the warm metallic finish really sings. That's what I love about this approach. You're not trying to make every surface disappear into the next. You're building up a palette, playing with how light bounces off different materials and giving the eye little moments of contrast. It's rich, it's cozy, and it has bags of personality, which is exactly what a bathroom should have.'

3. A Paneled Bathroom With a Palette of Earthy Green

If neutrals feel too pared back yet moody tones too strong, earthy colors offer the chicest middle ground. And if there's one color that continues to prove beautiful in a color-drenched bathroom, it's soft shades of green.

In this design by Kat Lawton Interiors, the same soft green covers the walls, trim, and bathroom vanity. The paneling brings a beautiful texture, while the vanity becomes a more architectural feature, allowing the marble top and rich wooden mirrors to stand out. Painting the trim gives the illusion of a grander room, while the black and white floor tiles add pattern and create a classic contrast. The subtle wooden details throughout the space tie the room together further and offer a continuous nod to the natural references.

4. A Shower Room Filled With Soft Pink

Pink bathrooms have been enjoying somewhat of a revival this year, and those soft, sophisticated shades are ideal for color drenching. The slight tonal variation between the painted walls and the textured tiles brings this design to life, so the simplicity of the palette can truly shine.

'What I love about this bathroom is how beautifully it plays with pink without feeling particularly pink! There are hints of peach, terracotta, blush and almost sandy tones, all sitting happily alongside one another,' says Keeley.

'The tiles aren't perfectly uniform in color, which is a huge part of their charm, and the warmth continues right up onto the ceiling. With a sloping ceiling like this, you could easily end up drawing attention to the awkward angles, but instead they've become part of what makes the room so lovely.'

5. A Sophisticated Wash Space Wrapped in Deep Purple

A bold color across the walls and ceiling is a great way to contrast the white tones of traditional bathroom suites. In this scheme, where a freestanding tub sits as the focal point, bold purple hues drenched throughout the space bring that sense of warmth and cocooning style without taking away from the tranquility or elegance of the design.

'Color drenching in a bathroom felt unexpected. While most bathrooms tend to be bright and airy, I wanted to create a space with a stronger sense of mood – something more dramatic and enveloping, while still ensuring the lighting worked beautifully for both getting ready in the morning and soaking in the tub at night,' explains Sappho Griffin, Founder of Shingle and Stone.

'The palette continues the story of the house we designed, where we used deep merlots, plums, greens, and ochres. Bringing those rich, saturated tones into the bathroom creates a sense of continuity throughout the home while giving the space its own distinct character.'

Bathrooms are rooms you can really have fun with decorating. Forget plain white schemes with no interest or contrast – simply color-drenching them will instantly add warmth, coziness, and a more inviting atmosphere.
