Minimalism and color don't have to be opposites in Christmas decor. In fact, applying color in a sparse, intentional way across the tree helps to create a striking display that guests will be thinking about long after the season has passed. So, what's the best way to combine the styles?
Mick Jagger's Christmas tree presents a fabulous example. Rather than a maximalist display full of tinsel, garlands, and fake snow, the Rolling Stone's tree contains only ball-shaped ornaments and string lights. He uses one strand of colorful lights (like these from Amazon) and one strand of warm white lights to bring in variety. His classic ornaments come in shades of rich red, blue, and green. A tiny mermaid tops Mick's tree.
Overall, Mick Jagger's Christmas decor is a study in decorating with color without going over the top.
As we approach the 2026 season, bright yet minimalist displays like Mick's are growing increasingly popular. Homeowners are especially using a combination of warm colors, as we see on his tree, to create a connection between the tree and the rest of their interior design.
'I think richer, more sophisticated color schemes will be a large part of how people decorate their Christmas trees this year,' explains Swati Goorha, Founder and Principal Designer of Swati Goorha Designs. 'The colors Burgundy, chocolate brown, forest green, antique gold and muted plum are a great combination of traditional Christmas colors with modern interior design trends. These colors feel welcoming and inviting as they complement natural wood tones, warm lighting and the new rich textures found in most residential interiors.'
Recreate Mick's Look at Home
To recreate Mick's look, you will need a combination of colorful lights, white lights, pretty reflective ball ornaments, and a mermaid tree topper. These are our editors' picks.
The deep red seen on Mick Jagger's Christmas tree will be especially popular this year. Chloe Barrow, Head of Creative Interiors at Laura James, advises: 'Burgundy is set to be huge again this year for Christmas tree decor, but not in the ways you would traditionally see. Yes, green and red baubles are always a classic combination, but this year we’ll see this deeper red paired with plum purples and rich chocolate browns instead, with gold or silver added to complement the pairings.'

Making Mick's look work comes down to one concept: restraint. Rather than throwing everything you have at the tree, colorful minimalism is all about using just the right amount.
'If you’re looking to effectively style these decor pairings yourself, I’d always recommend opting for 2 core colors and an accent color,' recommends Chloe. 'For example, burgundy and brown could be your core colors, with gold added as your accent.'
She continues: 'It can also be a great choice to mix up your textures too, choosing a mixture of matte and imprinted baubles alongside golden velvet or sequin bows. This is the perfect way to build a gorgeous Christmas color scheme with enhanced depth. It really gives a tree that wow-factor.'
In 2026, the chicest homeowners are thinking outside of the box with their Christmas decor. No longer committed to just one style, we are using our creativity to combine multiple aesthetics.
