IKEA’s Clever Houseplant Stand Is Perfect for Small Spaces – And It Doubles as a Potting Bench

Over the last few years of collecting houseplants, I've had to get quite creative with finding room to display all of them. A plant stand is one of my favorite solutions, utilizing vertical space and doubling the capacity of my indoor garden.

But, I haven't seen an indoor plant stand as clever as the IKEA ALPVIDE plant stand. Its two trays actually lift so you can carry them to the sink for watering. Even better, the raised edges mean the top tray can double as a workbench to repot plants without potting soil escaping. Or, you can use the trays to neatly store all your houseplant care accessories – really, it's super versatile.

The fact it's white is also a perk, quietly slotting into a wide range of interiors. To me, this is a space-saving piece to level up any indoor garden just in time for fall.

This plant stand is constructed of a wooden frame and powder-coated steel trays. The trays can be lifted off and replaced as needed. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Each shelf can hold up to 55lbs.

A Versatile Plant Stand

If you're looking for a low-effort way to create a vertical indoor garden, this IKEA ALPVIDE plant stand is an easy solution.

With two generous trays, it doubles the space for displaying plants. When full of a mix of variegated indoor plants (like this Thai Constellation Monstera from The Sill) and textural indoor ferns, you can create the look of an abundant green wall.

Or, you can use the plant stand to store all of your houseplant accessories. I personally love watering cans, plant misters, and pruning shears that look beautiful on display in between use. This glass plant mister from Wayfair, for example, is decorative in its own right.

I also love the fact the trays have a raised edge and can be wiped clean. It offers the possibility of using the top shelf as a mini potting bench. It would catch any potting soil, making it a good workspace for repotting and tending to plants.

This makes it a good alternative to having to lay out a potting mat (though IKEA have a beautiful striped one), with the shelf being at a good height to work at.

However you choose to use it, I think the minimalist design and versatile use makes it a valuable piece to add to your indoor garden.

With a 4.3-star rating, the reviews reveal shoppers are hugely satisfied with this purchase.

'I am IN LOVE with this plant stand! The removable top tray is a game changer for me, especially with certain plants,' one five-star reviewer writes.

If you style houseplants on this plant shelf in pots with drainage holes (like these terracotta pots from Amazon), the tray can be used as a water saucer. Simply remove it from the stand and take it over to the sink to add some water for bottom watering.

'I’m using the bottom shelf for my plant sprays and two small baskets that hold the tools and supplies I regularly use for my houseplants, so it’s both beautiful AND genuinely functional,' the reviewer continues.

'[It] allows for sun-loving plants on top and the partial sun plants below,' another person adds.

As for assembly, shoppers say it's pretty straightforward.

'Easy to assemble and holds all my plants,' another shopper writes.

'It was easy to put together, it's lightweight to carry, but sturdy enough for your plants,' another reviewer reads.

Something to note, of course, is the price tag is quite high at $79.99. However, the function and aesthetic of the plant stand seems to have won over customers, who are already planning repeat purchases.

'Would I love it more at a slightly lower price? Sure. But clearly the price isn’t stopping me because I’m already planning to buy another one,' one reviewer shares.
