Gwen Stefani’s Thanksgiving Table Setting Is a Masterclass in Mixing Vintage Dinnerware and Modern Accents

When planning your Thanksgiving table, it is easy to follow the assumption that you need to follow a theme. In Gwen Stefani’s Los Angeles kitchen, however, many rules are broken. And her tablescape is all the more beautiful for it.

Gwen brings together two distinct design styles on her Thanksgiving table, pairing ornate, antique-style floral dinnerware with gourds and decorative lettering that spells out 'Thanksgiving,' naturally.

Her combination of traditional china, modern marble, and fall produce is unlike any other Thanksgiving table decor idea I've seen so far. But there's a charm in the difference.

To get her look, start with similar china (for example, these plates from Wayfair). It's not too late to use them this Thanksgiving.

Getting the balance right is key, particularly with fall decor that can quickly make a table feel overcrowded. Robert Aumann, an interior design expert and founding partner of La Jolla Life, believes the appeal of Gwen’s display comes down to its simplicity.

'What I really love about Gwen’s Thanksgiving decorting idea is how natural and effortless everything looks,' he explains. 'Pumpkins have always been part of Thanksgiving decorating, but I think there are so many fun ways to use them. I love how Gwen brings everything together and makes it feel cozy and festive.'

For a similar arrangement, Robert recommends mixing pumpkins of different sizes and giving each one enough room on the table. This can make a bigger impression than a more dramatic centerpiece.

'If I wanted to create a similar look, I’d use pumpkins in different sizes,' he says. 'I’d put one or two big ones in the middle of the table and a few smaller ones around them. From my experience with interior design and home staging, I think a more natural arrangement often looks better.' He also suggests adding greenery from the garden to bring more texture to the display.'

It's similarly important not to overlook color. The classic orange of Thanksgiving pumpkins sits surprisingly well alongside the cooler tones of the marble and the floral pattern on the dinnerware. Robert suggests introducing softer shades to bring these elements together.

'When it comes to colors, I’d probably stick with the traditional orange pumpkins but add a few white or gray-green ones to give the arrangement a more modern feel,' Robert advises.

'I love how those softer colors look next to the brighter orange pumpkins. And if your dining room already has a lot of color, I’d keep the rest of the decorations simple.' The height of your centerpiece also shouldn't go overlooked.

'I’ve been to Thanksgiving dinners where I could barely see the person across the table because of the decorations,' Robert says.

'I’d keep the pumpkins and flowers low so everyone can see each other and talk comfortably.'

Design rules are evidently made to be broken. In doing so, Gwen has designed a Thanksgiving character that's modern but so characterful. If you ever feel like you need to stick to one scheme, this will convince you otherwise.
